About the project

In 1983, young civil rights attorney Federico Pe a ran for mayor of Denver during a disastrous recession. His bold vision of “Imagine a Great City” and door-to-door campaigning inspired a record number of Denver’s voters to turn out.
During his 8 years in office, Peña is credited with building Denver International Airport and bringing Major League Baseball’s Colorado Rockies to Denver, both engines behind Denver’s economic growth. Peña would later serve in two cabinet positions under President Bill Clinton, in Transportation and Energy and later as a Co-Chair of the Obama for President Campaign in 2008. He is a founder of the Latino Leadership Institute.
In his book, “…Not Bad for a South Texas Boy: A Story of Perseverance,” he shares the stories of what happened behind the scenes. Robert Reich, former U.S. Department of Labor Secretary, describes the book as “a treasure trove of insights about how to provide opportunity for all, rebuild our economy, and restore upward mobility.”
